CrossTalk is the largest and pioneer Policy Dialogue Competition in Bangladesh. This year the policy dialogue competition was more prominent and promising and Young Economists’ Forum was responsible to host the Inter-University Competition on four preliminary topics for the first round and one final topic for the Grand Finale, along with the Title Sponsors Flat Bazaar and S.F. Trading and Event Partner Eves Herbal Beauty Care Salon In CrossTalk, speakers from different public and private universities presented their research findings on given topics, before a panel of experts. Contestants from eight universities fought for the ultimate title of Best Speaker Award after the end of two consecutive rounds.
CrossTalk 2013 was a one-day conference, which began at 1 pm on April 15, 2013. This event ran for approximately six hours and ended with a grand dinner. The whole event took place at North South University’s Plaza Auditorium. It was held in two rounds. There were four different topics for the preliminary rounds and the best 4 out of all the participants were selected for the final round. The topics for the preliminary rounds were:
- Effects of remittance on exchange rate – where does the money go?
- Regulatory and institutional constraints in attracting foreign direct investment – Asian Tiger…an illusion?
- Economics of shrimp cultivation – short term profit or long term environmental sustainability?
- Recent Stock market crash – corruption or a theoretical inevitability?
The preliminary round had four groups each consisting of 4 participants competing against each. Each of the participants was given 15 to 20 minutes to express their views and opinions and also to justify them. The 4 best speakers from the preliminary rounds fought to win the title of the Best Speaker of CrossTalk 2013 on the topic – Assessment of public expenditure in education – achieving gender parity; who gets what?
There were two panelists for each preliminary round and three for the final round. The panelists were placed according to their areas of expertise. The panelists chose the best speaker and also gave their views on the respected topics and on the performance of the contestants. The panelist for the final round chose the ultimate winner and Runner-up. The expert panel comprised of the very eminent individuals in business and economics alike that included: Dr Md Ali Rashid – Chairman, Dept. of Economics, NSU, Dr. Fouzul Kabir Khan, Professor, School of Business, NSU, Dr M. A. Mahbud, National Consultant, Ministry of Planning, IMED and Dr. Amirul Islam Chowdhury, Professor, Dept. of Economics, United International University, Mr. Nazmul Karim, Investment Manager at SEAF Bangladesh AgriVentures Ltd., Dr. ATM Nurul Amin, Professor, Dept. of Env. Science and Management, NSU; Ms. Mahrukh Mohiuddin, Title Director, Marketing and Business Development, Dr Md Farashuddin Ahmed, Ex-Governor, Bangladesh Bank and Dr Abdul Hannan Chowdhury, Professor, School of Business, NSU.
16 talented contestants from 8 different universities participated in CrossTalk 2013. The participants were: Monirul Islam – United International University, Afnan Islam – American International University, Bangladesh, Farhana Meghami – American International University, Bangladesh and Christopher Sangma – International University, Bangladesh, Fardeen Ameen – International University, Bangladesh, Shehzad Arefin – BRAC University and Farah Iqbal – BRAC University, Meer Farhan Shahriar – North South University, Samanta Farahnaz – North South University; Tanzib Ahsan – Dhaka University, Shaer Reaz – Dhaka University, Ashraful Haque Mahfuze – North South University, Taosif Amin Khan – Institute of Business Administration, DU, Shadman Siddiqui – Institute of Business Administration, DU, Nasheen Abdullah – Institute of Business Administration, JU and Tahreen Zahra – North South University. Each participant preformed brilliantly which made it difficult for the panelist to choose the Best Speaker. Therefore, after a tough competition among the 4 finalists; Tahreen Zahra from North South University won the title of Best Speaker because of her splendid performance, while Taosif Amin Khan from IBA-DU won the Runner-up Award. All the participants were given a certificate for there brilliant performance.
In the end, “CrossTalk” was one of the biggest and most successful events ever hosted and conducted by the YEF Team. It was a pleasure and honor for YEF to host such prestigious event where many got the opportunity to enhance their knowledge about various issues related to the world and Bangladeshi economy.
